Spain's National Meteorological Agency (AEMET) said the August 2023 heatwave was the most intense on record, beating the July 2022 record by 4.6 degrees Celsius. Between August 8 and August 17, temperatures reached historic highs, and estimates suggest that 1,149 deaths were associated with the event. The heatwave contributed to massive fires in Spain and Portugal, which destroyed more than 400,000 hectares and caused eight deaths.
