Southern Italy, known as 'Mezzogiorno', recorded a GDP growth of 8.6% between 2022 and 2024, surpassing the north of the country. Infrastructure projects and European funds have stimulated employment, attracting migrants back to the region. However, for sustainable recovery, improvement of social infrastructure is necessary. Large projects, such as the construction of the bridge over the Strait of Messina, promise to generate jobs, but also face criticism regarding their environmental impact.
