South Korea announced on Tuesday its intention to launch its first nuclear-powered submarine around the year 2030, as part of efforts to strengthen its defense capabilities against North Korea.

Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back emphasized that the submarine will be built on national territory, using domestic technology. Seoul finalized an agreement with Washington last November for the construction of these submarines, but the details of the manufacturing site were not established.

Nuclear submarines offer a strategic advantage, being able to remain underwater for longer periods compared to diesel-powered ones. Although South Korea has nuclear reactors, the cooperation agreement with the U.S. limits its uranium enrichment capabilities for military purposes. President Lee Jae Myung stated that these submarines symbolize the country's commitment to peace and security on the Korean Peninsula.
