The Slovenian Parliament has adopted a law that strengthens police powers, despite criticism that it could be used against the Roma community. The law, named 'Ales Sutar' after a murdered man, was voted in with 59 votes 'for' and 4 'against'. Prime Minister Robert Golob stated that it will contribute to a safer life in Slovenia.
The new legislation, which will come into force in 2026, allows the police to conduct searches without a warrant in high-risk areas and introduces harsher penalties for repeat offenders. Amnesty International has warned that the law could lead to discrimination against Roma, and law professors have highlighted possible unconstitutionality issues.
