On September 15, Dutch police arrested a 24-year-old man from Amsterdam suspected of being part of the ShinyHunters hacking group. Investigators accuse him of cybercrimes and involvement in planning two murders abroad.
Searches led to the seizure of the suspect’s devices, and a significant amount of information was allegedly discovered on his laptop. The man is in pretrial detention, and Dutch authorities do not rule out further arrests.
The arrest took place before ShinyHunters claimed, on September 21, to have carried out an alleged attack on FBI servers. The group says it stole the data of approximately 38,000 agency employees, including names, job titles, badge numbers, addresses, and telephone numbers. Partial checks conducted by the BBC indicated that some of the information may be authentic.
The hackers claim they exploited a vulnerability in Oracle’s cloud services to access FBI databases containing employee information, medical records, and ongoing investigations. FBI Director Kash Patel thanked the Dutch authorities, while the deputy head of the Cyber Division urged the other members of the group to turn themselves in. ShinyHunters claims the attack was motivated by revenge, not by the pursuit of a financial reward.
