The online retailer confirms its presence at the debate on January 27 regarding the fight against illegal goods, after having declined previous invitations.

Brussels, January 15, 2026 – Representatives of the online retailer Shein have confirmed that they will appear before the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO) of the European Parliament on January 27. The upcoming debate will focus on the necessary measures to combat the spread of illegal and unsafe products in online markets, a topic that has generated increased scrutiny from EU regulatory authorities in recent months.

In short 1. Shein representatives will join the IMCO debate on January 27 to discuss the platform's compliance.

2. This marks the third time the retailer has been invited to Parliament, following concerns related to business models that violate EU legislation.

3. The meeting follows a resolution from November 2025 addressing the sale of prohibited items in non-EU markets, such as Temu and AliExpress.

The committee chair, Anna Cavazzini, mentioned that Shein agreed to appear only after several email exchanges and previous invitations. She stated that compliance with EU legislation is not optional for companies wishing to operate in the single market. Cavazzini specifically referred to the need to examine business models that "flood the single market with unsafe and illegal products," indicating that MEPs intend to closely analyze both the conduct of major online markets and the law enforcement efforts by the European Commission.

The meeting takes place against the backdrop of a resolution adopted by Parliament on November 26, 2025, which addressed the issue of unsafe products sold to consumers in the EU through e-commerce platforms. This resolution was a direct response to certain scandals, including incidents in France involving the sale of prohibited items such as weapons and child sex dolls. The upcoming discussion, which will also include representatives from the European Commission, is part of a broader analysis of non-EU markets, including Temu, AliExpress, and Wish, and their compliance with European safety standards.

The hearing will also serve as a platform for assessing the effectiveness of current law enforcement efforts by the Commission regarding the oversight of platforms. Legislators are expected to highlight systemic failures that have allowed dangerous items to remain accessible, despite existing regulations. The committee's objective is to determine whether current preventive mechanisms are sufficient or if stricter compliance measures are needed to protect European consumers from the risks associated with these international platforms.
