The contract was signed during a visit to Belgrade by French President Emmanuel Macron, who is seeking to conclude several economic agreements. The purchase of the Rafale jets comes as Serbia seeks to modernize its fleet of planes, most of which are of Russian origin. The choice to buy the Rafale is seen as a decision to anchor to the EU, despite close relations with Russia.
