Serbia has managed to obtain a three-month delay for the sanctions imposed on the oil company NIS, majority-owned by Russia, in the context where these sanctions threatened fuel supply in the country ahead of the cold season. Recently, Gazprom Neft and Gazprom, which together own 56% of NIS, requested the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the U.S. Department of the Treasury to transfer control of the company to a third party.

The initial sanctions on the Russian oil sector, including Gazprom, were imposed in January, but their enforcement for NIS has been postponed several times, coming into effect on October 8. This delay is essential for maintaining the stability of fuel supply in Serbia.
