Serbia and Russian energy giant Gazprom have extended their gas supply agreement by three months, until the end of 2026, public broadcaster RTS reported on Wednesday. The contract will remain under the same favorable terms as before, according to Dušan Bajatović, director of Srbijagas, Serbia’s gas importer and distributor.
Serbia is heavily dependent on Russian gas and has not yet signed a long-term contract following the expiry, in the summer of 2025, of the previous three-year agreement. In this context, Belgrade has relied on successive short-term extensions.
Also on Wednesday, Serbian energy company EPS, Srbijagas and Azerbaijani group SOCAR signed a shareholders’ agreement to build a power plant in Niš. The plant, with a capacity of 500 MW, will produce both electricity and heat and is expected to strengthen energy security and industrial development in southern Serbia.
Separately, the United States extended until October 30, 2026, a sanctions waiver for oil company NIS, which is majority-controlled by Russia. The measure allows crude oil imports to continue until the Russian stake is sold to Hungarian group MOL.
