The crematorium in St. Petersburg will be expanded and modernized, equipped with six new furnaces, increasing the daily capacity to 240 cremations. The project, which cost 207 million rubles, also includes equipment for grinding remains and additional cold storage rooms. This expansion comes in the wake of the massive losses suffered by the Russian army in the war in Ukraine, with estimates indicating over a million military personnel dead or injured. The crematorium, opened in 1973, conducted nearly 42,000 cremations in 2023, accounting for 67% of the total burials in the city.
