NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte will have a crucial meeting in Washington on Wednesday with American President Donald Trump, who threatened that he would leave the North Atlantic Alliance.
This meeting comes a day after Trump announced a two-week ceasefire with Iran.
Although Trump has often criticized NATO, he praised his personal relationship with Rutte, stating that he is a "formidable guy." Rutte will try to use this relationship to mitigate the American president's criticisms of the organization.
In addition to the meeting with Trump, Rutte will also be received by American Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth.
According to a NATO official, Rutte's visit was planned a long time ago and aims to capitalize on the success of the NATO summit in The Hague, where member states committed to significantly increase military spending under Trump's pressure.
