NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met in Brussels on Thursday to discuss the war between Ukraine and Russia, focusing on the need for a ceasefire targeting energy infrastructure and on continued military support for Kyiv.

Mark Rutte said that implementing such an agreement is important and emphasized the allies’ support for Ukraine through the PURL mechanism. This mechanism allows the purchase of U.S. weapons, including Patriot interceptor missiles, with European funding.

Volodymyr Zelensky said that Russia had launched approximately 1,000 drones from midnight until Thursday and called for the continued delivery of defensive equipment by NATO countries. The Ukrainian president stressed the need for Ukraine to quickly receive interceptors for ballistic missiles and ammunition for F-16 fighter jets.

Zelensky did not mention in his message the proposal for an “energy ceasefire,” announced late last week by U.S. President Donald Trump, but which has not yet been confirmed by Russia.

The meeting took place ahead of the autumn meeting of the European Council, attended by several leaders of the European Union.
