NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan discussed the security situation in the Black Sea in Brussels on Tuesday, amid intensifying drone attacks, attributed to Russia, on commercial vessels.

According to NATO spokesperson Allison Hart, the two officials reviewed security developments in the region and Turkey’s contribution to the Alliance’s deterrence and defense.

The discussion comes after several civilian vessels were sunk or damaged in recent weeks near the waters of NATO states, including Romania. Last week, Rutte announced the strengthening of NATO’s presence on the eastern flank and increased counter-drone capabilities. He said the Alliance would adapt its deterrence and defense posture according to developments in the situation.

Also last week, Rutte discussed security in the Black Sea with Romanian President Nicușor Dan and Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev. Bulgaria subsequently announced that it would cooperate with Romania and Turkey on a possible moratorium on attacks against commercial vessels.

In Strasbourg, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said on Tuesday that she was seeking to promote an agreement with Turkey, India and several African countries to guarantee freedom of navigation in the Black Sea.
