Polish authorities have arrested a 55-year-old Russian citizen suspected of spying for a foreign intelligence agency after he was caught photographing trains and railway infrastructure in the city of Świdnica, in the southwestern part of the country.

A Polish court ordered the man to be held in pretrial detention for three months. According to police, investigators found hundreds of thousands of photographs and files on his electronic devices documenting railway infrastructure, telecommunications networks and other critical facilities in Poland and abroad.

The suspect allegedly used professional photographic equipment and also photographed industrial facilities and production plants. Prosecutors claim that the materials were intended to be transmitted to a foreign intelligence agency.

During the investigation, police seized cameras, mobile phones, laptops, external hard drives and identity documents. The case is being investigated together with Poland’s Central Bureau for Combating Cybercrime, while authorities continue their checks to determine the scope of the suspect’s activities and the recipients of the collected information.

Context: In Poland and the region, Russia-coordinated espionage and sabotage networks have recently also been identified

Before this case, authorities in the area had announced several investigations related to espionage and acts of sabotage. In Romania, DIICOT and SRI described a fire at an industrial hall near the Carfil military factory as having been deliberately caused by a sabotage network coordinated from Russia, following the pretrial detention in Poland of a Ukrainian citizen suspected of having contributed to preparing the attack.

At the same time, two Belarusian citizens suspected of being part of the same cell were arrested in Germany, while in another case DIICOT announced the detention of a Russian citizen for photographing and transmitting information concerning Romanian and allied military sites, in anticipation of acts of diversion or hybrid-type sabotage.
