Russian Security Council Vice President Dmitry Medvedev says Japan must give up territorial claims to the Kuril Islands in order to conclude a peace treaty.

Russia and Japan never signed a peace treaty formally ending hostilities during World War II. Relations between the two countries deteriorated further in 2022, when Russia withdrew from peace treaty negotiations with Japan.
