The International Chess Federation suspended Russia following a decision by the Sports Arbitration Tribunal, which accepted Ukraine's complaint regarding the control of the Russian Federation in the occupied regions.

The governing body of world chess, the International Chess Federation (FIDE), has suspended Russia following a legal action won by Ukraine. The Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled that the Russian Chess Federation had usurped control over chess in the occupied regions of Ukraine, imposing a 90-day deadline for Russia to relinquish control over them.

Since Russia did not meet the deadline, FIDE decided to suspend Russia's membership, effective immediately. Adult Russian players will be able to participate in tournaments under the FIDE flag, while juniors can compete under the Russian flag. The decision was hailed by the Ukrainian Chess Federation as a "historic victory" and represents a symbolic blow to the tradition of chess in Russia. Currently, Russia no longer dominates world chess, having only one player in the top 20. The suspension contradicts recent trends of readmitting Russian athletes into international competitions after years of sanctions.
