Canada has joined the countries refusing to play against Russia’s hockey teams amid the war in Ukraine. Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that Russian athletes will not be able to participate in the World Junior Championship, scheduled to begin on December 26 in Alberta.
The decision comes after the Court of Arbitration for Sport lifted the ban imposed by the International Ice Hockey Federation on Russia’s and Belarus’s teams. Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Latvia, and Czechia have also announced that they will not play against Russia. Ukraine thanked them for their support, while tournament organizers must decide whether to host the competitions under these conditions.
