Russia declared on Tuesday that its solidarity with Cuba is unwavering, in the context where U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he expects to "take over Cuba" and that he can do "whatever he wants" with the communist island republic. The Russian Foreign Ministry expressed serious concerns about the escalation of tensions and condemned the "gross interference" in Cuba's internal affairs.

Trump has intensified economic pressure on Cuba, imposing an oil blockade that has severely affected the country's energy system. It also appears that the removal of Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel is a goal of the U.S. Russia has assured that it will continue to provide Cuba with financial and material support, despite the challenges posed by the U.S. embargo. Relations between Russia and Cuba have been close over the decades, and Moscow has been an important ally of Cuba since the communist revolution in 1959.
