The High Court of Australia ruled in favor of the Australian Government, rejecting Russia's request to build a new embassy less than 500 meters from the Parliament House. Russia had obtained a lease for the land in 2008, but in 2023, Australia canceled the contract through a law aimed at preventing construction, citing intelligence recommendations regarding the risks of a Russian presence near Parliament.
Following this decision, Russia challenged the legality of the law, but the High Court confirmed its validity, nonetheless obliging the Australian Government to pay compensation to Russia. Additionally, a Russian diplomat who attempted to block the takeover of the land was subsequently expelled.
