Russia is reducing its military presence at Qamishli airport in Syria in the context of strengthening the Syrian government's control over the region.

Russia has begun the withdrawal of its forces from the airbase in Qamishli, northeastern Syria, where they have been stationed since 2019. This decision comes in the context of the Syrian government in Damascus, led by President Ahmed al-Sharaa, reaffirming its authority over regions previously controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces, predominantly Kurdish. Syrian sources have confirmed that Russian forces have started a gradual withdrawal, with plans to redistribute some units in western Syria and return others to Russia. Additionally, vehicles and heavy weaponry have been transported to the Hmeimim military base. Although the Russian Ministry of Defense has not commented, it is speculated that the Syrian government may request the complete withdrawal of Russian forces once the Kurds are expelled. Moscow, an ally of Bashar al-Assad, has established relations with the new president of Syria, who has promised to uphold previous agreements with Russia, thus ensuring the security of Russian military bases in the country.
