The Russian Ministry of Defense announced on Monday a unilateral ceasefire in the conflict with Ukraine, valid on May 8 and 9, 2026, to mark the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in 1945. The announcement was made through a message posted on MAX, a state-supported messaging application, according to a decision by President Vladimir Putin, the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.
Russia expressed hope that Ukraine will respect this cessation of hostilities, coinciding with the military parade in Red Square in Moscow, scheduled for the same days. This move underscores Russia's intention to promote an image of unity and solemnity around this historic date.
