German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has been accused by Russia of pursuing a path of militarization, which worries Moscow. Merz, who has taken a tougher stance in support of Ukraine, has promised to increase defense spending to 3.5% of GDP by 2029. Russia's foreign ministry spokeswoman denounced Merz's anti-Russian rhetoric, saying it is becoming increasingly aggressive and that escalating relations with Russia is a concern for German citizens. Berlin has so far not commented on the accusations.
