U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio signed a waiver unlocking $320 million in military aid for Egypt, citing the national security interests of the United States. The decision comes at a time of major tensions in the Middle East and amid Cairo’s role in the conflict between Washington and Tehran.
According to the State Department, as cited by the Associated Press, Egypt contributed to diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions and acted as a mediator between the United States and Iran. The funds are part of the approximately $1.3 billion annual package provided to Egypt by the U.S. and may be used to purchase American equipment and weapons.
The sum does not represent a new allocation, but the release of funds previously withheld because of concerns over human rights, including allegations of torture, arbitrary detention, and restrictions on freedom of expression. The State Department says these issues will continue to be discussed with the authorities in Cairo.
A similar waiver was granted by the Biden administration in September 2024, amid Egyptian support for efforts to end the war between Israel and Hamas.
