In June 2025, solar energy became for the first time in history the main source of electricity in the European Union, surpassing nuclear energy and other sources.

According to Eurostat, the share of renewable sources in the energy mix of the European Union increased from 52.7% to 54% in the second quarter of 2025, largely due to solar energy, which reached 19.9% of the total. Denmark and Latvia recorded the highest shares of renewables, while Slovakia had the lowest share. Significant increases were observed in Luxembourg and Belgium.
