Japan has observed Chinese ships for 158 consecutive days near disputed islands in the East China Sea.

The tiny islands, known as the Senkaku Islands in Japan and the Diaoyu Islands in China, are administered by Japan, but Chinese Coast Guard ships frequently come close to them, causing diplomatic tensions. The incidents came as relations between the two countries deteriorated significantly in 2012 when Tokyo 'nationalized' some of the islands.
