Ratko Mladić, the former military commander of the Bosnian Serbs, died in detention in The Hague, where he was serving a life sentence for genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes, including the massacre at Srebrenica in 1995, when over 8,000 Bosniak Muslims were killed. Mladić, who was in the UN detention center, had deteriorating health in recent years, and his lawyers had requested his release on humanitarian grounds.

He was involved in the ethnic cleansing campaign during the Bosnian War (1992-1995) and was found guilty of atrocities committed during the siege of the city of Sarajevo. After a long period of hiding, he was arrested in 2011 and sentenced to life imprisonment in 2017, and the verdict was upheld in 2021. Mladić remained in detention until his death, being considered one of the main perpetrators of the crimes in the Bosnian War.
