Russian President Vladimir Putin will make a visit to Kazakhstan, where he will oversee the signing of an agreement that will establish the parameters for the construction of a nuclear power plant. Kazakhstan, with a population of 20.5 million, has not had nuclear generation capacity since 1999, when the BN-350 reactor was decommissioned. Following a referendum in 2024, the country decided to build new nuclear power plants, aiming for a capacity of 2.4 gigawatts by 2035. Alongside this topic, Putin will also discuss the transit of Russian oil to China through Kazakhstan, where Russia has agreed to increase its oil exports. The agreement for the nuclear power plant anticipates that Russia will provide 85% of the funding, and the plant is expected to be completed by 2035-2036. Kazakhstan, a major producer of uranium, currently relies on coal and hydroelectric power for electricity production.
