Of these, 2,427 are considered "martyrs" in the Islamic sense, being innocent victims. The non-governmental organization Iran Human Rights (IHR) estimates that the total number of protesters killed could reach 3,428, and the final toll could exceed 20,000 deaths. Doctors in Iran have reported that the majority of the victims are young people under 30 years old, and at least 330,000 people have been injured, many of the killings occurring in the first days of protests. Although Iran has returned to an apparent calm, this is maintained through fear and surveillance, and the discontent of the population remains latent, raising questions about how long the regime will be able to control the situation by force.
