Hundreds of people gathered on Saturday in Budapest to protest against the Hungarian Minister of Transport, Janos Lazar, who made insulting remarks about Roma, suggesting that they should "clean the filthy toilets" on trains. His comments sparked outrage, especially a few weeks before the legislative elections on April 12, in which the opposition seems to have a real chance of confronting Prime Minister Viktor Orban's party. The protesters, who gathered in cold and rainy weather, emphasized that Roma are often treated with double standards by the authorities. Gusztav Lakatos, a construction worker, stated that Lazar's remarks "cross all boundaries," and Barbara Budafoki, an educator, accused the government of inciting hatred. Although Lazar has apologized, the protests continue, and political analysts suggest that these comments could negatively affect Orban's conservative coalition in the elections. Roma constitute the largest national minority in Hungary, and many protesters hope that the current government will be replaced.
