Nine-month-long anti-government protests in Serbia have escalated into violence, with protesters throwing firecrackers and fireworks at police. In Belgrade, police intervened with tear gas to disperse crowds. The protests were sparked by the deaths of 16 people following a train station collapse and reflect dissatisfaction with corruption and the leadership of President Aleksandar Vucic. The Council of Europe's human rights commissioner criticized the excessive use of force by the authorities.
