On Saturday, thousands of people marched in Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia, to support the families of the victims of the devastating fire in a disco in Kocani, which occurred in March and resulted in the deaths of 63 people. The protest took place a few days before the opening of a trial related to the tragedy. The protesters, along with the relatives of the victims, carried a banner with the portraits of the deceased and the message "63 shadows will follow you," chanting "Justice for Kocani."
The fire was caused by fireworks in an unsafe venue according to safety standards. The families of the victims are demanding a complete investigation and the establishment of a special commission, considering that the previous investigation left many unanswered questions. The trial will involve 34 defendants, including a sitting minister and former officials, accused of serious violations of public safety. Additionally, a separate investigation is underway regarding corruption and organized crime in connection with the tragedy.
