Colombians are called to the polls on Sunday to elect a new president, in a vote held in a tense climate, marked by an increase in violence and attacks carried out by armed groups. Authorities have mobilized over 400,000 soldiers and police officers to secure the elections, deemed crucial for the political future of the country. The main favorites are leftist senator Ivan Cepeda, who advocates for the continuation of social reforms and peace negotiations, and right-wing lawyer Abelardo de la Espriella, who promises tough measures against criminal groups. The results of the first round are expected a few hours after the polls close.
