The fragments hit a vehicle and a motorcycle of the California Highway Patrol, which were protecting Vice President JD Vance. Although no injuries were reported, Governor Gavin Newsom ordered the closure of a 30 km stretch of Interstate 5, considering that the shooting could pose a danger to drivers.
The exercise, which was supposed to include 60 projectiles, was interrupted, and the Marines began an investigation to determine the cause of the premature detonation. The Marine Corps stated that the exercise was supposed to follow safety protocols.
