Portugal proposes to recognize the Palestinian state, in view of worrying developments in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip. This decision will be discussed at the UN General Assembly in September and follows other countries such as France and Canada which have announced similar intentions. The Portuguese president and foreign minister emphasize that the process has been carried out prudently, in coordination with European partners.
