Poland's Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński has announced the extension of border controls for another month, originally planned to end on August 5. The measure is a reaction to the increase in illegal migration heading to other EU countries, such as Latvia and Lithuania, following restrictions on the Belarus-Russia route. Germany has also implemented border controls on its borders with Poland and the Czech Republic, later extending them. Although these measures undermine the principle of free access to the Schengen area, they are allowed in emergency situations.
