The former president of Peru, Pedro Castillo, has been sentenced by the Supreme Court for conspiracy to commit rebellion in 2022, when he attempted to dissolve Congress in the face of an imminent accusation. Castillo has been in custody since December 2022.
Additionally, two of his former ministers, including former Prime Minister Betssy Chávez, received the same sentence, with Chávez having asylum in Mexico. The Peruvian government severed diplomatic relations with Mexico due to this asylum. Castillo and his former ministers have the right to appeal. This is the second conviction of a former president this week, after Martín Vizcarra was sentenced to 14 years in prison for corruption.
