The Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, announced a 'historic victory' for his pro-European party, the Civil Agreement, following the parliamentary elections held over the weekend.
According to preliminary results, his party obtained over 50% of the votes, while the main rival, Strong Armenia, pro-Russian, recorded 23.5%. These elections are the first after the ceding of the Nagorno-Karabakh region to Azerbaijan in 2023 and reflect a political reorientation of Armenia towards the West. Pashinyan emphasized his commitment to democratic reforms, with the support of the European Union.
However, the election was marked by allegations of foreign interference and arrests related to vote buying, especially among opposition supporters. Additionally, Armenia has suspended its military alliance with Russia, amid declining domestic support for Moscow, following failures in managing the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh. Pashinyan stated that Armenia's future will be dedicated to strengthening independence and democracy.
