Michigan police detained a parent this week after the parent’s child pulled a loaded handgun, which was in a holster, from a backpack at a daycare. The incident took place at Childrens World Early Learning Center and was captured on surveillance cameras.
Police Chief Joseph Bialy said Monday, September 28, that daycare employees acted quickly after a teacher spotted the weapon. Staff removed the gun and kept the children safe, thereby avoiding a situation with potentially serious consequences.
Authorities have not released the parents’ identities. One of them is a police officer in a neighboring jurisdiction, but is not the person detained. Police are treating the case as a serious incident and have emphasized the importance of safely storing firearms.
The daycare decided not to enroll the family again. On Tuesday afternoon, the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office was reviewing a request to issue a warrant. No hearing regarding the detained person’s legal status was scheduled that day. Video evidence and how the gun ended up in the backpack are part of investigators’ inquiries.
