Palma de Mallorca, a popular city on the island of Mallorca, will implement a reduction in the number of available spots for cruise ship passengers, decreasing them from 8,500 to 7,500 during the summer months between 2027 and 2029. This measure, part of an agreement between the Government of the Balearic Islands, the City Hall, and 20 cruise companies, aims to regulate the activity of cruise ships and protect the historic center of the city. Outside the summer season, the number of spots will remain unchanged. Additionally, the agreement will limit the number of ships that can dock daily to three, with further restrictions for larger ones. This decision comes amid local protests against overtourism, which has steadily increased, reaching 18.7 million tourists in 2024. The Spanish Socialist Workers' Party proposed limiting the number of annual tourists, but the motion was rejected.
