Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, announced an agreement with the Pentagon for the integration of its artificial intelligence tools into the classified systems of the U.S. military, with restrictions similar to those required by rival Anthropic. This agreement was signed after President Donald Trump ordered government agencies to cease the use of AI technologies from Anthropic, deemed a risk to the supply chain. Altman emphasized that safety principles, such as bans on domestic surveillance and human accountability in the use of force, are included in the agreement.

The Pentagon will have a six-month transition period to implement these changes, and Trump warned that he would use all presidential powers to ensure Anthropic's compliance. This represents a major blow to the company, which risks becoming a pariah in the national security sector. Anthropic announced that it would legally contest any risk designation from the Department of Defense, considering it illegal and dangerous for American companies. The designation as a "risk to the supply chain" could severely impact Anthropic's business with the government and its relationships with the private sector.
