This incident is the latest in a series of attacks on vessels traversing this strategic route, which, in times of peace, carries one-fifth of the world's commercial oil and natural gas.

Iranian state television reported that the ship, which was carrying liquefied natural gas, was attacked after ignoring warnings, but did not directly claim the attack. Iran stated that only its approved route is safe and has been accused of attacking other vessels that used alternative routes.
