A maritime incident occurred in the Strait of Hormuz, where a tanker was hit by unidentified projectiles, according to a report from the British maritime security agency UKMTO. The incident took place on Sunday, approximately 78 nautical miles (145 kilometers) north of Fujairah, United Arab Emirates, and was reported around 19:40 GMT. All crew members are safe, and the agency confirmed that no environmental damage has been reported.
Although the agency did not specify the origin of the vessel, the Strait of Hormuz is a crucial route for the transport of one-fifth of the world's oil and natural gas. The incident comes amid rising tensions in the region, following Israeli-American attacks on Iran. In this context, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. Navy will begin escorting ships through the Strait of Hormuz as part of the "Project Freedom."
