An oil tanker and a container ship were struck on Tuesday by projectiles of unknown origin in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic area at the center of the conflict between the United States and Iran. The incident was reported by the British Maritime Trade Operations agency (UKMTO), which announced that investigations are ongoing.
So far, the agency has not specified whether the vessels suffered damage or whether there were any casualties. The origin of the projectiles and the circumstances of the attack are unknown.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the main maritime routes for transporting oil worldwide. Since the beginning of the conflict in the Middle East, which was triggered at the end of February by American and Israeli strikes against Iran, Tehran claims to control the strait and warns vessels crossing it without authorization.
The attack reported by UKMTO increases the risks for commercial traffic in an already tense area, but there is currently no official claim regarding the striking of the two vessels.
