The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) announced that it has been monitoring several Russian military aircraft approaching Alaska, in the air defense identification zone (ADIZ). Among the identified Russian aircraft are two strategic bombers Tu-95, two Su-35 fighter jets, and an A-50 early warning aircraft. In response, NORAD scrambled F-16s, F-35s, an E-3 command aircraft, and four KC-135 refueling aircraft to intercept and escort the Russian formation. NORAD emphasized that the Russian aircraft did not enter the sovereign airspace of the United States or Canada, remaining in international airspace. The ADIZ is constantly monitored to ensure early identification of aircraft approaching national territory.
