Context: Serbia’s elections were triggered by student protests that began after the Novi Sad tragedy
In Serbia, the political movement behind the “Students’ List” gained momentum after the canopy at the railway station in Novi Sad collapsed on November 1, 2024, an incident that resulted in 16 deaths. The initial protests transformed demands for investigations and clarification into broader calls concerning corruption and institutional changes, culminating in large-scale demonstrations in Belgrade.
After nearly two years of student-led protests, the early parliamentary elections were scheduled for October 25, 2026. The students submitted to the Electoral Commission a list of 250 candidates, accompanied by thousands of supporters, and the contest was presented as the main test for the government led by Aleksandar Vučić.
