The President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, and his wife, Cilia Flores, were captured by American special forces in Caracas and evacuated aboard the aircraft carrier 'Iwo Jima'. On January 3, an FBI plane transported them to Stewart Air Force Base in New York, and they were later taken by helicopter to the DEA headquarters in Manhattan for biometric data collection. The couple was then placed in a federal detention center in Brooklyn.
The White House released a video recording of Maduro, who appears cheerful and greets in English. The charges brought by the U.S. Department of Justice include conspiracy for narco-terrorism, cocaine trafficking, and possession of weapons. Donald Trump stated that the United States will administer Venezuela until a legal transfer of power occurs. Maduro and Flores could be brought before the court in New York on January 5.
