The government of Nicaragua has announced the severance of diplomatic relations with Italy following the "unjustified, aggressive, and irresponsible" statements made by Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani. He made comments at a meeting of the European People's Party, where he paid tribute to the memory of Aldo Moro, a former Italian prime minister assassinated by the Red Brigades, and criticized the Nicaraguan government for providing refuge to Alessio Casimirri, involved in Moro's murder.

Tajani emphasized that Italy will not forget the victims of terrorism and will continue to demand accountability from those responsible. Casimirri, a former member of the Red Brigades, was convicted in Italy for serious crimes and settled in Nicaragua in the 1980s, where he obtained citizenship. The Nicaraguan government has rejected requests for his extradition, which has contributed to the escalation of diplomatic tensions.
