The state of New York has proposed legislation that would ban the use of artificial intelligence chatbots that provide information or advice in regulated professional fields, such as medicine and law.

This proposal has been discussed within the local Internet and Technology Committee and could become law if it is voted on. According to the proposal, chatbots that violate professional licensing norms or that practice a profession without authorization will be made illegal. This means that AI solutions like ChatGPT or Gemini will not be able to answer questions from these fields. In case of non-compliance, specialists could take legal action against the chatbot manufacturers.

Lawmakers argue that this measure is necessary to prevent the risks associated with false information that can affect people's safety. If the proposal is adopted, it will come into effect 90 days after the governor's signature.
