NATO has decided to gradually reduce the forces of the KFOR mission in Kosovo, deployed since 1999, due to a security situation considered stable and the increasing capacity of local authorities to manage security challenges.
General Alexus G. Grynkewich, Supreme Allied Commander Europe, emphasized NATO's commitment to security in Kosovo, stating that the reduction of forces does not represent a complete withdrawal, but rather an optimization of KFOR forces.
The adjustments will be implemented in phases, depending on the rotations of national contingents, and will be closely monitored. NATO reserves the right to reverse the measures in case of a deterioration of the security situation.
The KFOR mission has played an essential role in preventing ethnic tensions and maintaining a safe environment in Kosovo, and the reduction of forces is seen as a signal of the progress made.
