Greece’s Prime Minister sends Turkey a message of “peace” and “dialogue,” but warns: “We do not accept threats”

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis sent Turkey a message of “peace” and “dialogue,” while reaffirming that Greece is prepared to defend its national integrity and sovereign rights. The statements were made on the island of Kastellorizo, also known as Megisti, located near the maritime border between the two countries and Turkey’s western coasts.

At the end of a three-day visit, Mitsotakis said that dialogue with Ankara represents a choice based on self-confidence and respect for international law. He stressed that the island lies at the easternmost point of Greece and Europe, presenting it as a symbol of the intention to build a peaceful future.

The Greek prime minister specified that Athens threatens no one, but does not accept threats. To support the island’s fewer than 600 residents, the government announced aid, subsidies, and incentives for the establishment of new residents.

The message comes after Turkey announced the creation of a marine park consisting of two protected marine areas off the Turkish coasts of Fethiye and Kas (in the south) and in the northern Aegean Sea and off the Dardanelles, around several military wrecks from the First World War.Greece considered the initiative illegal and accused Ankara of undermining efforts to improve bilateral relations.
